Today, the modern Montbeliarde is defined as a mixture of Tourache, Bernoise breeds, with integration from Red Holstein since 1960.
These cattle are traditionally famous for their milk, from which Emmental and Gruyère cheeses are made.

Pyhsical Characteristics
The Montbeliarde is a light red and white color, very similar to the red and white Holstein. It has a white head with an open muzzle and lyre-shaped horns. The height at the withers of Montbeliarde cows is 135-140 cm and the average weight is 685 kg, while the bulls are 148 cm and 1,100-1,200 kg.
The breed is famous for its hard feet and strong udders.
Yield Characteristics
In 1993, milk yield from 287,734 cows was an average of 5,693 kg in 286 days with an average of 3.83% fat and 3.36% protein.
